Turn Someone On To Something New

Save to
del.icio.us

So Monday we talked about listening to things that you don’t really like or understand, in an effort to comprehend what another artist is doing and perhaps helping you to grow as an artist yourself.

That being said, we also have to admit that we don’t have eternity to check everyone out and give them as many passes as it takes to get what they do. There are recordings, songs, people and projects out there that just suck and it’s okay to admit that it sucks and move on.

The saddest thing for me is all the people that embrace something because it is popular and all their friends are digging it, so in an effort to not be out of it, they pretend to dig it as well.

I remember as a teenager going out and buying One Night With You by Elvis Presley. At the time I thought it was just caca, but I didn’t want any of my friends to know that I thought that. So I actually pretended to like it. I never did. I thought it sucked then and now all these years later, I still think it sucks. No finesse, no development, no reason to listen to it.

Evidently it takes a lotmore cojones than most of us have to stand there and admit to your pals that something they like just isn’t cutting it for you. It seems that right now, we celebrate a lot of mediocrity and hype, as opposed to real artistry, commitment and talent. I mean Paris Hilton is famous. The Kardashians have their own TV show; Hef’s whores have their own TV show. And what are they bringing to the party? Skin, I guess. They don’t seem to have anything else to contribute accept the example of the downside of too much ego coupled with utterly no reason to live.

The greatest steel string acoustic guitarist that I’ve ever heard is a fellow from Osnabruck, Germany named Peter Finger (www.peterfinger.com). More dexterity, artistry and heart than I’ve ever heard from another player in that genre, but no one knows who he is. I was turned on to him by my friend, Laurence Juber (www.laurencejuber.com), whose first two solo CD's were released through my label, Beachwood Recordings.

So I put out one ofPeter's CD’s, called Innenleben. I sent it to all the radio stations and touted it as the brilliant piece of work it was. Blinding speed on one cut, tear your heart out legato pathos on the next; brilliant compositions, musicianship and recording technique which has yet to be equaled. Radio wouldn’t touch it. They were busy playing Sonny Landry, who, not to diminish him, has never resonated for me in any capacity. That’s what makes a horse race, I know, but the fact remains that no one plays guitar as well as Peter Finger and no one knows who he is.

What is going on in our world, when brilliance is supplanted by connections and corporate greed?

I would like this site to help all artists, of every level and ilk, to become better at what they do. And today I would like to expand that. What I’d like you to do is to pick someone that you believe deserves to be heard and turn on someone who has never heard them. Spread the word about an artist or recording that you believe in. Show someone some real artistry that has impacted you. You will both be richer for it.

Who knows? Someone might be doing it about you, right now! Pass it forward.

you know it never occured to me to pretend I was into something that I really wasnt...and when I found out that other kids were doing that I was appaulled...as a result I didnt have any friends til High School and along the way I was viciously teased and taunted...And I didnt make any apologies about it...either I was a neo hippie grew my hair out and wore love beads...this was in a Catholic School as well mind you...then finally in High School I made friends and fell in with a crowd of musicians and artists and writers...they also happened to be the smartest kids in school...and even then I made no bones about telling any of them what I thought they were digging was crap...we all did it to eachother as a matter of fact...

but I digress...

When I was in college...I studied atonal music and i must say I really dug it...I still do...and the fact that there is some organization things like the 12 tone scale...maybe its cos my brain has operated something like one of those coloured oil and water projection things from the sixties...the more free form the more I dig it...something new for me would be like...*WRETCHING* britney spears...I dunno maybe there is something out there that I havent heard...gee I'm an elitest jackass arent I?
